The road to the Kingdom is not so pleasant, and comfortable, and easy, and flowery, as many dream. It is not a bright sunny avenue of palms. It is not paved with triumph, though it is to end in victory. The termination is glory, honor, and immortality; but on the way, there is the thorn in the flesh, the sackcloth, and the cross. Recompense later; but labor here! Rest later; but weariness here! Joy and security later; but here endurance and watchfulness.”

Horatius Bonar

There is an active satanic movement in these latter days growing in mass numbers that is blatantly and outspokenly antagonistic to Christianity. The terminology for this movement is called, “Deconstruction” or the breaking down of Christianity. Many today are buying into the lie that all of Christianity is make believe and they pride themselves on unashamedly claiming it as a fraud. Because our society is replete with superficial Christianity and non-biblical claims, dishonest approaches aid the wrong thinking for people who at one time claimed some form of Christianity although without true faith and essential conversion. Even faithful ministries are being affected and have people in increasing numbers who are defecting. Fifty years ago, Christianity was so popular in America that people who openly rejected it were shunned. I do not ever recall meeting a person named Judas. Today, however, this massive movement which is growing in numbers and popularity parades itself as being intellectual and scientific. “Deconstructionists” are largely those who once proclaimed themselves as Christians but now pride themselves on their ability to deny it and pronounce freedom from what they say are foolish, old ideas and constraints. It is being promoted as the so-called enlightened thing to do. New positions have now been embraced on sexuality, gender, morality, and the non-reality of sin, salvation, or hell. They are engineering a new culture, and it is increasing daily. By completely rejecting God, they magnify self and self-freedom. There are blogs, podcasts, and conventions which engage in sharing their newfound life apart from Christianity. Individual experiences are shared and these are praised.

We know from Scripture there are those who think that they are Christians, belonging to Christ, but will find out on judgment day that Christ never knew them (Matt. 7:21). These “Deconstructionists” instead are those who claim to have been Christians, but now in hostility express their denial openly and proudly. Satan has always had his crafty opposition, but this is unlike anything seen in recent history. The movement is a growing system of persecution to stamp out Christianity by arising against God and His church, and it is built on the pervasive popularity of humanism and self-focus. The Bible has much to say about apostasy. God’s true church has a need to be aware of this movement and know from Scripture what God would have His church to do.

This defection from Christianity claims to be intellectual but is not. Apostasy is not occurring because people are accurately studying the Bible and have determined from their study that it is untrue. It is just the opposite. The proliferation of superficial Christianity has largely been used of Satan to promote false and empty promises creating many potential candidates for deconstruction.  Where Christianity isn’t real, leading to a transformed life, those engaged have no substantial foundation and are susceptible to lies. In researching this movement, we find people who are led by their experience. Instead of being focused upon God and truly seeking to know Him in His Word, they are focused upon self-fulfillment. Others felt they were lied to, mistreated, or had some type of falling out. They could not find personal satisfaction. This wrong focus is generated through superficial ministries where the Bible is not proclaimed correctly, and the truth of Scripture is neglected resulting in false beliefs.

I am reminded that first and foremost people need to be under the Word of God. It must be presented clearly, consistently, and without compromise. Then, people under the Word need to be soberly warned, “For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted the heavenly gift and have been partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good Word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God and put Him to open shame” (Heb. 6:4-5). This passage is written to Christian Jews in the early church who experienced directly or indirectly the very ministry of Christ and or His disciples. They witnessed their heavenly gifts, and the work of the Holy Spirit. Today, those who sit under true teaching are blessed by the whole counsel of God from His Word. “For whom much is given, much is required” (Luke 12:48). From what we just read from Hebrews and many other portions of Scripture apostasy is explained as the most serious of offenses to God. For those who have been given God’s truth and rejected it, the matter is so serious that it should grip our hearts. We must prayerfully do all we can in God’s church to warn, encourage, strengthen, and fight with all our heart against any movement that would dissuade people from Christ to a lie that will destroy their soul. Beloved, be personally aware of this movement, and pray that we as a church family may so represent our God as to never be accused of contributing to anyone being led astray. We must be known for our uncompromising love for God and faith in His Word. Christ alone is the only hope and answer for any person..
