“The second coming of Christ will also involve the reversal of the curse that was placed on creation at the time of the fall. The creation will no longer groan under the weight of the curse. It will be set free from its bondage to decay (Rom. 8:18–25). All things will be made new. There will be no more tears, no more death, no more mourning, no more pain, for all of these things will have passed away (Rev. 21:1–8). The enemy Satan will be defeated and judged, no more to accuse and attack the people of God (Rev. 20:7–10). All men will stand before the judgment throne of Christ. Those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life will inherit the kingdom. Those whose names are not found will be cast into outer darkness (Rev. 20:11–15).”

Keith Mathison

The Old Testament verse that is the most quoted in the New Testament was written by King David; “The Lord says to My Lord, sit at My right hand until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet” (Ps. 110:1). The preacher and theologian J. M. Boice says this verse is quoted or alluded to twenty seven times by New Testament writers. To any person reading it without a knowledge of Christ or guidance of the Holy Spirit it is an enigma. The language of God the Father speaking to God the Son makes it clear this verse cannot be referring to David himself. The few words in this verse describe the highest pinnacle of understanding into the mysterious workings of the triune God in heaven by revealing a conversation between two of the Persons of the Godhead. This verse alone provides us the revelation of Messiah’s deity and co-equality with God the Father. Not only does it reveal their equality, but also their present and future plan which provides us wisdom for living by greatly benefiting our faith and endurance. Understanding the true significance of this verse grants us wonderful insight and reason for what is occurring in the world around us, and our need to stand firm in living the Christian life.

This verse was quoted by Christ in each of the synoptic Gospels to humble the know-it-all religious leaders of His time who could not interpret it. This passage reveals God’s promised remedy from the great fall of our original parents into sin and that God would send One to crush the head of Satan (Gen. 3:15). This One called, “Lord,” by David is the repeatedly promised Messiah. We can know just from this glorious verse that God has not forgotten or forsaken His promised plan. The Son, our Messiah, here called, “my Lord,” is sitting at the right hand of the Father which is the seat of authority and power for a purposeful season of preparation to make His enemies a footstool for His feet. We read this by faith resting in the precision of God’s perfect timing. Satan is alive and active on earth in the affairs of man, yet he also is really only accomplishing God’s sovereign overall plan which will ultimately bring about his demise, and set up the kingdom of Christ our Lord. The Father is allowing this opposition, this evil only for a time. It will not last, but ultimately the Son will arise and exercise His right by restoring that which was forfeited by the treachery of Satan in the original sin of Adam and Eve. Christ will destroy this temporary rule of Satan after displaying to the angelic realm and to us its evil, and then bring its demise and bring about a new glorious future of righteousness. This one verse tells us what we need to know to keep fighting the good fight of faith in the present.

We are living in what appears as the lull spoken of by the Father to the Son. We are in the time of the Son’s placement called, “sit” at the Father’s right hand with its timing seen by the word, “until.” The idea of, “sit” does not mean inactivity, but is a reference by contrast to the promise of His coming. This coming when Christ will no longer sit is seen in the final words of the prophet Malachi at the close of the Old Testament; “But for you who fear My name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings; and you will go forth and frolic like calves from the stall. And you will crush the wicked underfoot, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day that I am preparing,” says the Lord of armies” (Malachi 4:2-3). This lull in God’s timing is a special time therefore for us to live by faith in His promise. We are called upon to wait upon the Lord, to expect His promised coming, and to live in the light of the certainty of that promise. We know that He came to provide His exclusive sacrifice for our sins just as He promised, and that He did so exactly as the Scripture said He would. Now we know that His mission is not entirely fulfilled, and will not be until He comes to crush the head of Satan.

After the work of Christ on the cross our Lord told His disciples, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth” (Matt. 28:18). We see that this temporary sitting therefore does not mean our mighty Lord is not busy and active beyond our abilities to understand. Paul tells us, “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones, or dominions, or rulers, or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together” (Col. 1:16-17). We cannot begin to fathom what His authority or active engagement in all the affairs of our life truly mean. For now, we can only rest on the knowledge of God’s wonderful promise.

How blessed we are to have His Word. It tells us the future. It gives us certain hope, and commands us to live out that hope waiting upon the completion of God’s promise. We are so privileged to know the end from the beginning, and just as Christ Himself is waiting upon the Word of the Father to complete His glorious restoration, so we wait upon Him knowing that all who are in Christ have a glorious future. Come Lord Jesus!
