Pastor’s Thoughts – 11/03/2024
November 1, 2024Pastor’s Thoughts – 11-17-2024
November 15, 2024Our important election this week is still fresh on everyone’s mind. Thinking of it from a Christian perspective brings questions. When we consider the magnitude of our nations sinful condition and that we are under God’s judgment, the foremost question is why did God give us what appears as the better of the two choices for president? Romans 1:18 and following tells us that by our suppression of God’s truth God gives over a people to graduated wicked behavior and reprobate thinking. The platform of the liberal party has continued to represent and promote an anti-God mindset now prevalent in our culture. Among other wrong thinking, the liberal candidate proudly made pro-abortion her primary campaign objective. The more conservative party also has its faults, but they are not as radical.
I have no desire to be political, but to be Christlike and pleasing to Christ and to think biblically. This should always be our desire and world view as Christians and sojourners in this fallen world. We ultimately know the only absolute answers are not with politicians but are found exclusively in our Lord Jesus Christ. That does not mean we cannot appreciate those who stand firm in making the best decisions for our nation. The issue of the evil platform and agenda of the more liberal party cannot be ignored, or merely treated as something political without consequence. Our country has been rejecting God in graduated degrees for years and most of these perversions have been fostered largely through the liberal party. As the church in general has failed to maintain a firm testimony, our society’s ideas of truth and righteousness have sadly been redefined.
It is important as a Christian to recognize that our nation is now a post Christian reality, and that many decisions not only neglect God but oppose His righteous character. Our money proclaims, “In God we trust” yet we have radically denied this at every turn. All of us should have a righteous concern for the future of our children and grandchildren. What kind of America are they dealing with today, and what will it be like tomorrow should the Lord tarry in His coming? Proverbs 29:12 says, “If a ruler pays attention to falsehood, all his ministers become wicked.” We have been and are ruled at the highest levels by standards of wickedness. Our leaders have drawn others around them with the same mindset. Decisions are not based in consideration of what God says, but on expedience with evil. Issues of rational protection of our borders, our monetary system, or protection of the unborn have not been a priority. The book of Proverbs expresses principles for rulers. Rulers are to be administrators of justice and righteousness. “A king who sits on the throne of justice disperses all evil with his eyes” (Prov. 20:8). The idea is that a ruler should be foremost concerned for justice and the destruction of evil. This is what we look for and pray for in our leaders.
People of the news media are trying to analyze the election. We know it is God who puts rulers into place. Isaiah says of rulers, “Scarcely has their stock taken root in the earth, but He (God) merely blows on them, and they wither, And the storm carries them away like stubble” (Is. 40:24). God is sovereign over who rules and for how long. Political parties plot and plan using every conceivable scheme and method to promote their agenda and garner votes. But God is able to thwart the plans and rage of men. Because former President Trump’s previous service maintained more attention to God’s standards, he was the choice of many Christians. As a result, his win is expected to bring some reprieve to the continuous freefall of evil and bad judgment. Please pray it will!
The reason for the election outcome is not in the campaigns, but I would suggest two possibilities. First are the prayers of God’s people. We have been commanded to pray for our rulers (1 Timothy 2:1-4). Paul has said we pray in order to, “Lead tranquil and quiet lives in all godliness and dignity.” This is our desire and need for our families. It is so important that we worship and serve God without hindrance or invasion of evil. We are reminded that after God revealed to Abraham what He was about to do, Abraham prayed for Sodom, even bargaining with God. God was so receptive, He replied that if only ten righteous were found in Sodom, He would not destroy it. Today there is a righteous remnant in America. I hope you have been praying and are praying for God’s mercy. Secondly, is the importance of the United States support for Israel. God has promised to protect Israel in these final days. The instrument God uses for much of Israel’s protection is sourced from the United States. Our current administration has been weakening in resolve and growing steadily in opposition to Israel. This appears not to be so with our President elect. God told Abraham, “I will bless those who bless you (Israel), and the one who curses you, I will curse” (Genesis 12:3). One of the first persons to phone President elect Donald Trump in congratulation was Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu.
Beloved, there is a purpose in all God does. It appears that God has spared us from the worst choice of leadership that we sadly deserve. We should be thankful. We also need to pray for our new president. It is our duty to seek God on behalf of our leaders! Thankfully, we are in God’s hands and at His gracious disposal. Nothing can separate us from His love. All praise and thankfulness should be given to our Lord!
