Proverbs 29:2 states: “When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when a wicked man rules, people groan.” I have attempted of late not to watch as much news, but I consider I need to be informed even as to how to pray. In observing our nation, I have done some groaning. As the Congress of the US continues to spend money the nation does not have, and debate a health care proposal that will deceitfully control the health and well being of all Americans and thus give an unreliable government authority over millions of people, I heard one of our liberal congress women argue that "it was moral for the tax payers to pay for abortions." Isaiah 5:20 states "Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!" Two verses down Isaiah continues to pronounce woes to those "Who justify the wicked for a bribe, And take away the rights of the ones who are in the right!" These wicked lawmakers will use any excuse, any method, hook or crook to attain their goals of personal power. But, that is not the end of what Isaiah says for he goes on and makes this pronouncement from the Lord God "Therefore, as a tongue of fire consumes stubble And dry grass collapses into the flame, So their root will become like rot and their blossom blow away as dust; For they have rejected the law of the LORD of hosts And despised the word of the Holy One of Israel." They can do great damage, but to their own personal peril. God says they will ultimately and tragically fail, and disturbingly they are dragging our nation with them.
In these dark days of wicked power over a land of prosperity built on the blood and sweat of our forefathers, who prayerfully sought to live their lives in freedom and worked diligently to that end, there is sadly little to glory about in the predominate leadership of our nation. It is tough to see these things and not be troubled, especially thinking of our children and their children. However, there is one thing to always glory concerning, and that is in a sovereign God who has all things under His special control. Where can a reasoning person find encouragement or strength? Certainly not in the wicked and subversive behavior of those who are seeking their own wicked way at the expense of millions of others. These are indeed dark days in our great land. They are however days that are predicted. May I remind that Paul wrote two thousand years ago in 2 Timothy 3:1-5 "But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these."
What was predicted has come true in our society. There has been a turning over time away from the preaching of the Word in the pulpits of America. It started in what appeared to be innocent compromise and has extended into humanistic beliefs that have usurped the truth of God. God’s truth was seen as no longer important, and as His truth cannot be separated from His Person, so He was removed from our schools and is being cleansed from society. The truth in Christ is no longer politically correct, and political correctness is our new religion. What then has occurred is a lack of discernment among the populous. They have not been taught. Our society has not "avoided such men as these" (2 Tim 3:5) as Paul told Timothy. Instead, we have embraced them for our hope. People in our society are so blind they continue to elect those who would place them in subjection, and destroy the blessings of the nation built on the resolve of those with clear thinking, and God influenced reasoning. What I am declaring is the essence of the problem began in the pulpits of our land. Preachers stopped preaching the Word, and the result is a generation that does not know God (Judges 2:10). What is the answer to this terrible tragedy? The answer is still the preaching of the Word of God, and the teaching of truth to our children and the populace (2 Tim 4:1-3) – this alone will bring a return to the Lord our God in repentance. Raising an apposing party, or starting a movement will not work unless it has the foundation of God’s truth, and with it the work of the sovereign God behind it. Nothing short of the truth of God will work.
For those who know God and see their nation crumbling around them, yes it is very discouraging, but be of courage, the same God is still in charge and will yet care for His own. He is the same God who stated, "I will never desert you or forsake you" (Heb 13:5). That does not mean we should be lazy. We should be busy in the truth. Our task is to remain faithful to Him, and do what He has commanded. We know that He will move according to righteousness and grace. Our God is far bigger than any circumstance. For those who are His, remember this special phrase of promise from Christ's own lips "Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom" (Luke 12:32). We may go through some tough times, and have our heart vexed, even as Lot in Sodom (2 Pet 2:7), but ultimately, just like righteous lot, we (those in Christ Jesus) will be triumphant. Paul put it like this in Romans 8:31 "if God be for us who can be against us." In the meantime, keep your faith sharpened while praying for those over us (1 Tim 2:1). Seek those places of true worship (John 4:23), and trust in the Lord with all your heart not leaning on your own understanding (Prov 3:5). Christ is still Lord, and He is coming again!
